Finding Colors 尋找顏色

By Rachel Chen

A first-time cultural exchange picture book in collaboration with Kenbuchi-cho, Hokkaido (Japan)!
Comes with a thorough, illustrated Kenbuchi-cho travel brochure!

Aruru, a collector of colors, has come to a land of snow.
He thinks: "A vast expanse of white—where would the colors be?"
Little did he know: when the snow melts, the land becomes ever so colorful…

Kenbuchi-cho, a town in Hokkaido, Japan, is home to fewer than 3300 people. When it tried to promote and increase the reputation of the town through picture books, it gained the title "the Home of the Picture Book".

In a year, Kenbuchi-cho is covered completely in snow for up to half the year. The icy snow, however, is simply "the earth's blanket" to the locals. Thus, this picture book takes up the alpaca, a notable import of the town, as protagonist Aruru, a traveler whose color-collecting footsteps the reader follows. We walk along with him across Kenbuchi-cho, starting from the pure whites to slowly discover the mysteries and beauty of Hokkaido's four seasons, as well as the beautiful simplicity of small town life.

Brochure
Since Finding Colors is a first time collaboration between Taiwan and Hokkaido's Kenbuchi-cho, Kenbuchi mayor Hayasaka Sumio personally introduces to the reader the origins and history of the town through this brochure. Here, the reader can see real photographs side-by-side with beautiful illustrations, learning through one's eyes all sorts of things about the town and its neighbors. Places include the Picture Book Museum, the Alpaca Farm, Sakuraoka Lake, and the Overlook Slope (Tyoubou no oka).
