A Tour of Hong Kong 香港遊

By Sun, Hsin-Yu

A Tour of Hong Kong features the remarkable cityscapes of and modern life in Hong Kong,  observed through the eyes of two little visitors. An Eastern girl and a Western boy, serving as our tour guides, approach the city in their respective ways, thus highlighting in their own interactions the fusion of the West and the East, history and modernity in the city known as “The Pearl of The East.”

The girl from the East, with a red balloon in her hand, takes the train to pass through the border of China and Hong Kong. She visits Victoria Harbor, tastes the local dim-sum, and visits “The Temple of the Yellow Weasel.” Strolling in the streets freely, the girl explores daily life in Hong Kong via all kinds of public transportation, almost as if she is a local. However, the girl finally leaves from Hong Kong for her next destination.

The boy from the West arrives at Hong Kong by plane. He walks through the flagstone street named after Sir Henry Pottinger, the first governor of Hong Kong under the rule of the United Kingdom. Taking the double-decker bus to the Avenue of Stars, where the statue of Bruce Lee is located, he follows footsteps left from centuries ago. In this way, his journey is reminiscent of Hong Kong's past identity and glory as one of the Crown Colonies. Then, the boy heads for China, the East, carrying with him the memories of the past.

Like most tourists in Hong Kong, the girl and the boy, after giving the city a brief glimpse, continue their journeys elsewhere. What does the city mean to the girl from the East and the boy from the West? What does Hong Kong look like in the eyes of different travelers? What is the real life in Hong Kong really like, obscured by appearance of this great city? These are mysteries lying in wait for readers to discover for themselves.
